New York at Christmas
|
Mrs Freak and I both celebrating our 50th birthdays - I was last week she is next week. Fancied doing something a bit different so we are going to New York for a long weekend. Anyone been this time of year, anything we must see or other recommendations?

I’m looking at going in Feb so any recs are welcome
For Xmas I’d suggest:
1. Ride over queensborough bridge in a yellow cab
2. Go to radio city music hall
3. Empire Diner
4. Get some firecrackers at Quong Yuen Shing & Co
5. Battery Park to look at Statue of Liberty
6. World Trade Center memorial
7. Fulton Fish Market
8. Feed Pigeons in Central Park
9. Grand Army Plaza
10. Get some ice cream at the Place - 3 scoops!
11. Duncan’s Toy Chest - if you can’t find it then FAO Swartz will do.
12. Ven Cleef and Arples store
13. Bethesda Fountain
14. Some carols at Carnegie Hall
15. St Anne’s Hospital for Children
16. Xmas tree at Rockefeller Centre
17. Then back to the Plaza to exchange gifts
18. And then onto Central Park for one final gift
Not a bad itinerary for Xmas on NY

Cliche, I know, but great.
Pizza at Grimaldi's in Front St (no dessert). Ice cream at Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory under the bridge Walk back over Brooklyn Bridge
Time it to walk back at dusk as the lights come on the big buildings.

I'd jump on the first plane to Miami. Or go to Cuba instead.

Keep your wits about you. Like most Democratic Party run cities in the US, crime us up.

It’s class mate. Worked out there for a while 25 years ago and travelled back regularly since and last went in September. Always quality.
Do the sightseeing stuff. Twin towers is somber but very well put together. Enjoy getting out on the ferry and also going across to Williamsburg which is a good night out.
Bars and restaurants are quality. Do a bit of research and you will not go far wrong. Have fun

I loved NY when I went back in 98 and want to go again one day. I wouldn't fancy this time of year though to be fair, fucking freezing and bleak, autumn or spring is where it's at.

I'm out there once a quarter with work, and the place has not recovered since covid at all. Everywhere stinks of weed, the homeless problem is was more than, say, San Francisco, and it feels like a run down dump now.
Maybe I'm jaded from so many visits, but I'd do Chicago, San Fran or Nashville instead

Nashville is an amazing city. Fantastic place to visit! I've never been to Chicago but I'd love to.
Have heard San Fran is a sad horrible shadow of itself from 10 years ago when I went. My dad was there a few weeks ago after a visit around 2015 and said it broke his heart how much it's gone downhill.

Yes, they are far more into Thanksgiving than Christmas.
Think of all those great Thanksgiving films and Thanksgiving singles...

what an odd post Surface. of course they do xmas stuff, but like i said they are more about thanksgiving.
i've been about half a dozen times for 'the holidays' (my brother lives there). they dont decorate houses the way people do over here, the social part of it isnt as big and they dont do christmas dinner the way we do.
or maybe thats just new york/new jersey.

I lived there for 20 years and yes they don't do Christmas like we do, for a start they don't have Boxing day, the Canadians do though.

Just you brother's house, I reckon, mate. 'Americans are more about Thanksgiving' is something people say to make themselves look clever.
Thanksgiving is a big deal, people go home, have dinner, argue, watch the football and go home again. A bit like Easter here. For kids Thanksgiving would rank way below Halloween.
Christmas is just the same as here - Father Christmas, decorations, lights, presents, office parties, movies, songs, TV specials, false bonhomie. All that good stuff.
And I've lived and worked there.
Settles down to watch the Grinch that Stole Thanksgiving

Try Carnegies for a salt beef sandwich. Do not eat anything else beforehand! Its phenomenal. Just near Carnegie Hall
